I Looked for the Number That Changed Pluto
Twenty years after Pluto crossed a definition, I found an uncounted vote and a world still becoming more particular.
Today is twenty years since Pluto stopped being called a planet by the people authorised to settle such names.
I went to the record expecting a number.
On August 24, 2006, members of the International Astronomical Union gathered in Prague for the closing session of their General Assembly. They voted by raising yellow cards. The instructions issued that morning said the cards would be counted and the result communicated afterward.
Four related motions were waiting.
Resolution 5A defined three classes of bodies orbiting the Sun. A planet had to orbit the Sun, be made nearly round by its own gravity, and have “cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit.” A dwarf planet met the first two conditions but not the third. Everything else, apart from satellites, would be gathered under “Small Solar System Bodies.”
Resolution 5B proposed adding the adjective classical to the eight planets that survived this division.
Resolution 6A placed Pluto in the dwarf-planet class and made it the prototype of a new group of trans-Neptunian objects. Resolution 6B proposed a name for that group: “plutonian objects.”
I opened the IAU’s published results and found numbers beside the smaller decisions.
The motion to make Pluto the prototype passed with 237 votes in favour, 157 against, and 17 abstentions. The proposed name lost by three votes: 183 to 186. The attempt to call the eight remaining planets classical received 91 votes in favour, with too many against to require a full count.
Then I reached the line I had come for.
The principal definition of planet, the motion that moved Pluto outside the category it had occupied for seventy-six years, “was not counted but was passed with a great majority.”
There is no final integer in the official result.
This does not mean the vote was close, hidden, or necessarily improper. A room full of raised cards can make a majority obvious before anyone finishes counting it. But the asymmetry held my attention. The record knows exactly how many people preferred an unnamed class to “plutonian objects.” It does not know exactly how many hands changed the Solar System from nine planets to eight.
Or, more carefully: how many hands changed the list.
Eight days earlier, the same organisation had announced a very different proposal. Under that draft definition, roundness produced by gravity would have been decisive. The Solar System would contain twelve planets: the familiar nine, plus Ceres, Charon, and the object then known as 2003 UB313. More candidates were expected.
The committee behind the draft had reached unanimous agreement. One member described the choice of gravity as allowing nature to decide.
By the closing session, the definition included something gravity alone could not say about a body: whether it had cleared its orbital neighbourhood. Pluto was round enough, but it travelled among other bodies in the Kuiper Belt rather than dominating its path. The adopted category depended not only on what Pluto was, but on what remained around it.
Nature had not delivered a label. It had delivered shape, mass, motion, neighbours, and an expanding set of observations. People still had to decide which relation mattered enough to become a boundary.
I had arrived at the anniversary thinking a count might make that boundary feel firm. Instead I found a sequence of proposals. Twelve planets became eight. Classical was rejected. Plutonian lost by three. The decisive majority was visible enough not to enumerate.
Meanwhile, another record was already travelling toward Pluto.
New Horizons launched in January 2006, when its destination was still the ninth planet. The spacecraft did not turn when the terminology changed seven months into its journey. It continued for more than nine years and passed about 7,800 kilometres above Pluto in July 2015.
Its observations made the body less classifiable in one sense and more particular in another. Pluto had mountains, haze, five moons, and a thousand-kilometre-wide nitrogen glacier. The complete encounter dataset—about 6.25 gigabytes—took more than fifteen months to cross the distance back to Earth at one or two kilobits per second.
That transmission ended in 2016. Its arrival did not finish the observing.
This month, researchers returned to the old images of the glacier’s northern edge. A new analysis in The Planetary Science Journal, also described by NASA, examines dark lines and diffuse patches between city-sized convection cells. Their resemblance to wetted features on terrestrial glaciers, combined with conditions that rule out nitrogen rain, is evidence that liquid nitrogen may sometimes rise through cracks from beneath the ice.
The claim is cautious. It comes from images made during a single flyby, not from an instrument waiting on the surface. The dark marks may be traces of intermittent wetting rather than a liquid seen moving. Yet twenty years after the category changed, a decade-old picture is still making Pluto more specific: not merely round, not merely uncleared, but a frozen body whose glacier may briefly carry liquid upward.
No vote altered that surface. No later discovery automatically resolves what to call it.
The definition and the observations answer different questions. One keeps a shared vocabulary usable as the number of known worlds grows. The other resists the compression required by any vocabulary. Confusing them makes classification sound either more arbitrary or more complete than it is.
I do not know whether the 2006 definition is the best one. Its third condition is still disputed, and its phrasing applies only to bodies orbiting our Sun. I also do not think recovering the missing count would settle those arguments. It would tell me more about the room, not more about Pluto.
What the absent number did was expose my own wish for a clean transfer of authority. I wanted a precise total on one side, a precise category on the other, and the object safely filed between them.
The surviving documents are more honest than that arrangement.
They preserve a unanimous draft that failed, a principal vote too lopsided to count, subsidiary votes counted almost to a tie, and a definition that remains official while observation continues to complicate the thing defined.
Twenty years later, Pluto has not moved back across the line.
But neither has it stayed inside the small meaning of the line drawn around it.
